Brown's Ranch Is Reopening. The Conservancy's Calendar Says November.

October 22, 2026

"Watch for the grand reopening date of Brown's Ranch Trailhead anticipated for late October." That line comes from the City of Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve page, in its Preserve Month 2026 notice. The city has not given a date or announced an event.

The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is the city's partner organization for guided hikes, rides and educational programs in the Preserve. Its schedule shows a firmer date. The Conservancy's events calendar lists no programs at Brown's Ranch for the rest of October. Its first one there is a Sonoran Desert Discovery walk on Saturday, Nov. 7. Over the following two weeks, Brown's Ranch hosts more of the Conservancy's November public programs than any other trailhead in the Preserve.

The city's date is a target, and the Conservancy's programs are dated plans. Taken together, they point to the end of October at the alternate trailheads and November at Brown's Ranch.

What Closed in July, and Why It Took All Summer

The city closed Brown's Ranch Trailhead at 30301 N. Alma School Parkway on July 13, 2026. Patch reported that the closure covered the trailhead building, the parking lot and parts of the surrounding trail system. It called Brown's Ranch one of the busiest gateways into the Preserve.

The city's project page puts the budget at $1,165,599. The money comes from the 2004 Preservation Sales Tax. Expected completion is listed as "Fall 2026." The page has three stated objectives:

  • A redesigned parking lot built for better durability, drainage and circulation
  • New lighting and roofing on the trailhead building, for comfort and safety
  • A new trail dispersal area, with five trail segments rerouted to reduce congestion while protecting sensitive areas

The third item will change how a visit feels. City renderings show the dispersal area with concrete seat walls at the trailhead. According to the city, the goal is to reduce congestion at the start of the trail system while keeping sensitive areas protected. The city hasn't published the names of the five rerouted segments. Expect the first few hundred yards out of the lot to look different, and check the trailhead map before following a habit.

The upgraded starting point leads to some of the best-known destinations in the northern Preserve. The Conservancy's Brown's Ranch page lists access from this trailhead to Granite Mountain, Cholla Mountain, Brown's Mountain, Balanced Rock and Cathedral Rock.

Two Calendars, One Trailhead

The gap between "late October" and Nov. 7 matters because of what each date represents. The city's line is a construction estimate, and its project page gives the expected completion only as "Fall 2026." The Conservancy's calendar is made up of individual listings, each with a date, a start time, a trailhead and an RSVP link.

Here is the Conservancy's November list at Brown's Ranch, as posted:

Date Program Time
Sat., Nov. 7 Sonoran Desert Discovery, Educational Walk 9:00–11:00 a.m.
Mon., Nov. 9 Introduction to Preserve Trails Hike 8:00–11:00 a.m.
Tue., Nov. 10 Brown's Mountain, Cone Mountain, Latigo Loop Hike 8:00–11:00 a.m.
Thu., Nov. 12 Desert Surfaces, Educational Walk 9:00–11:00 a.m.
Sat., Nov. 14 Brown's Ranch Homestead, Educational Hike 8:00–10:30 a.m.
Sat., Nov. 14 Nature's Medicine Cabinet, Educational Walk 9:00–11:00 a.m.
Tue., Nov. 17 Brown's Ranch: The Real Story, Educational Walk 9:00–10:30 a.m.
Thu., Nov. 19 Walk Like a Tortoise, Educational Walk 9:00–11:00 a.m.
Sat., Nov. 21 A Meditation Walk 9:00–10:30 a.m.
Sun., Nov. 22 Trailside Bike Repair Basics 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

That adds up to ten public programs in sixteen days. In the same November calendar, Fraesfield has four, Granite Mountain and Lost Dog Wash have three each, Gateway has two and Pima Dynamite has one. The schedule is also weighted toward Brown's Ranch itself. Three of the ten are about the trailhead's own history or terrain: the Homestead hike, "The Real Story" walk and the Brown's Mountain loop.

October looks different. The Conservancy's late-October schedule runs entirely out of Gateway, Fraesfield, Lost Dog Wash, Pima Dynamite and Granite Mountain. It doesn't include a single Brown's Ranch listing.

If the city opens the gates in the last days of October, the trailhead will be open before the guided season there starts. Either way, the first organized reason to go back is on Nov. 7.

The Rest of October Belongs to the Other Trailheads

During construction, the city has sent visitors to four alternates. The addresses are from the Preserve page:

  • Tom's Thumb, 23015 N. 128th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85255
  • Pima Dynamite, 28777 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85262
  • Fraesfield, 13400 East Rio Verde Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85262
  • Granite Mountain, 31402 N. 136th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85262

Here are the Conservancy's remaining October programs in date order, starting Friday, Oct. 23. Most of them meet at those trailheads or at Gateway and Lost Dog Wash:

  1. Missions, Massacres, and Plagues, Educational Hike, Friday, Oct. 23, 8:00–11:00 a.m., Fraesfield Trailhead
  2. Axel Grease, West Express, and Latigo Trails Hike, Saturday, Oct. 24, 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., Pima Dynamite Trailhead
  3. Women of the McDowells, Educational Walk, Saturday, Oct. 24, 8:00–10:00 a.m., Lost Dog Wash Trailhead
  4. Ride Granite Mountain, 15 Mile Training Ride, Sunday, Oct. 25, 8:00–11:30 a.m., Granite Mountain Trailhead
  5. Lecture, Unsolved Mysteries of the McDowells!, Tuesday, Oct. 27, 5:00–6:30 p.m., Mustang Library, 10101 N. 90th Street
  6. Venom in the Preserve, Educational Walk, Thursday, Oct. 29, 8:00–10:00 a.m., Gateway Trailhead
  7. Boojada Adventure, Educational Walk, Saturday, Oct. 31, 8:00–10:00 a.m., Gateway Trailhead
  8. Patrol the Historic Stoneman Road, Educational Ride, Saturday, Oct. 31, 8:00–11:00 a.m., Fraesfield Trailhead

The Oct. 24 Pima Dynamite hike includes the Latigo Trail, which is also part of the Nov. 10 loop out of Brown's Ranch. Taken together, the two outings show the same section of the northern Preserve from both sides of the closure. The Conservancy calendar lists an RSVP link for each program.

The city is running its own Preserve Month event on the same Saturday. "Eek at the Peak" takes place at Pinnacle Peak Park on Oct. 24 from 9 to 11 a.m., with a costume contest, a scavenger hunt, AZ Bat Rescue, nature stations, book giveaways and a do-it-yourself craft. The city's Exploration Journals, aimed at children up to third grade, are available at any trailhead through October. So are the commemorative Preserve Month stickers.

The First Week of November, Trailhead by Trailhead

The other trailheads stay busy as Brown's Ranch comes back. The first week of November has programs on four sides of the Preserve:

Date Program Trailhead
Sun., Nov. 1 Bird Walk Granite Mountain
Sun., Nov. 1 Ride the Maricopa Trail Fraesfield
Tue., Nov. 3 Granite Mountain, 136 Express, Hawknest Trails Hike Granite Mountain
Thu., Nov. 5 Geology Along the Campana Trail Fraesfield
Sat., Nov. 7 Sunrise Trail to Andrews-Kinsey Trail Hike Lost Dog Wash
Sat., Nov. 7 Sonoran Desert Discovery Brown's Ranch

Nov. 7 is the turning point. Brown's Ranch gets the Sonoran Desert Discovery walk that met at Gateway on Oct. 17, and nine more Brown's Ranch programs follow through Nov. 22. Later in the month, the Gateway to Windgate Pass hike on Nov. 17 and the Thanksgiving "More Pie Please" hike at Lost Dog Wash on Nov. 26 keep the southern trailheads in use.

The Mustang Library lecture series also continues. "Scottsdale Water's Future" is on Nov. 14 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m., after the morning Homestead hike at Brown's Ranch the same day. "Master Planned Developments in Scottsdale" follows on Nov. 24 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Before You Drive Up Alma School

The city's Brown's Ranch project page and the trailhead closure notice on the main Preserve page are where the reopening will be confirmed. As of mid-October, the Preserve page still read "Brown's Ranch Trailhead is closed for improvements." Until that notice comes down, the four alternates above are the way into the northern Preserve. The Conservancy calendar lists Nov. 7 as the first morning with a scheduled reason to park at the new lot.
